What is the Smart Garden Saxon Cradle Planter?
Smart Garden Saxon Cradle Planters are ideal for beautifying and bringing colour to any garden space. They’re also perfect for under windows or around access points, such as your home’s front door. Cradle planters are a simple method of adding attraction around your home. There’s no need to drill holes in walls or attach to any additional structures. Cradle planters are floor mounted and simple to construct. They allow you to plant up flowers that’ll look great in your garden, patio, seating areas and balconies. They’ll also work well to bring in beneficial insects to vegetable plots.
Constructed from strong and durable powder coated steel with a decorative twist. The weatherproofed frame and basket allows quick and easy installation. The included coco liner contains up to 30-litres of compost and helps to regulate water retention and aid drainage.
Garden tip:
- More plants per basket means more watering. Larger numbers of plants will deplete water reserves faster.
How Do I Plant Up My Smart Garden Saxon Cradle Planter?
Filling the included coco-lining with a readymade soil-perlite mix or mixing perlite with your preferred planting medium provides better water retention. Perlite is a porous, inert, volcanic rock that acts to hold water for the plant’s to access, allowing longer periods between watering.
Garden tip:
- Add perlite so it makes up around 10-50% of the total volume of potting mix. Add 10-20% perlite if you want better water retention.
- To make hanging the baskets easier (and lighter) don’t water your baskets until you hang them up.
The Smart Garden Saxon Cradle Planter hanging basket holds up to 30-litres of compost. It’s really easy to plant up. Cutting holes in the coco liner allows you to maximise coverage by planting hanging plants in the sides of the trough.
The rough gauge for planting a hanging basket is to use one plant per inch of basket diameter. This means you could fit up to 12-plants per 30 cm (12″) and so on.
Can I Grow Food Crops in a Cradle Planter?
Cradle planter’s are versatile. They’re great for bringing a splash of colour to your door or garden with classic hanging basket plants like fuchsias and petunias. They can also extend your capacity for growing more of your own food.
As a gardener, it’s likely that you already grow your own nutritious food that tastes much better than what you can buy in the supermarket. If you grow enough to freeze, you can be using your summer surplus all winter and into the next spring.
Hanging Cherry Tomato varieties like ‘Cherry Falls’ or ‘Tumbling Tom’, the Blackberry ‘Black Cascade’ and hanging basket Strawberry varieties are all examples of food crops that you can grow in your hanging baskets.
How Do I Attract Beneficial Garden Insects?
Intermingling food crops with flowers that attract beneficial insects can help you pollinate and control pests that thrive on your vegetables and fruits. Plants like Lobularia (sweet alyssum) have small white flowers to attract beneficial insects, like parasitoid wasps, that help control garden bugs and pests. Bidens and Diascias are great for attracting bees that will then find your fruits to pollinate.
